| Grey, Sir Edward – FLY FISHING - 1928 reprint of 1899 1st – 276p – J.M. Dent, London – Sir Edward Grey lived during the exciting period of the dry-fly revolution in the UK and was exposed to the innovative and controversial new theories and methods of Halford, Marryat, and other pioneers of the field. His life was one of active participation in the politic of his day, and he became the youngest member of the House of Commons. In that capacity he was deeply involved in both national and international issues, and even served in the cabinet as foreign secretary during the hectic decade of 1905 – 1915. As an ardent angler and regardless of his obvious onerous responsibilities he still began to dream about angling as early as six months before the salmon season arrived. He has lots of company. – Book is a nice clean copy in red covers with a bit of soiling. - $35.00 – | Click here for pictures |

| Grove, Alvin R. – THE LURE AND LORE OF TROUT FISHING – 1951 1st edition – 318p – Stackpole, Harrisburg – Arnold Gingrich was extremely knowledgeable where fly fishing literature was concerned and also authored some excellent angling books of his own. Arnold along with other critics all agreed on placing this book on the list of the best 30 fly fishing books of all time. A most valuable addition to the serious angler’s library,. it is the first book on trout fishing which contributes here in America much that the works of Skues, Halford, Ronalds, and Mosely have contributed to the famous fly-fishing literature of England. For the first time the similarity of American and English insects and their imitations is brought out in significant detail. In the chapters "Food for Fish," "Naturals and Artificials," and "Patterns and Reflections" are to be found the rudiments of all natural American fly patterns. Emphasis is placed on the natural insects of importance to the fishermen of this country, and in addition to detailed discussions where necessary, much valuable descriptive information on natural insects is summarized in nearly 20 pages of tables. – Book is fine in very rare good dust jacket with a few small chips. - $70.00 | Click here for pictures |

| Haig-Brown, Roderick – A RIVER NEVER SLEEPS – 1948 1st edition – 320p – Collins, London – This author is a bit like Lay’s potato chips, no one can eat just one. With Haig-Brown, if you read one of his books, you will want to read them all. This is another of his classics describing year-round angling on all types of water. Nothing pleases me more as a angling book dealer than to find these old classics so well preserved. This copy is an extremely nice copy with a whole colorful dust jacket, with just a hint of foxing to the front panel. The jacket has small chips at the top and bottom of the spine, but is otherwise a very rare whole, unclipped jacket. Book is fine with no owner’s signatures, other writing or marks of any kind. A nice collectible - $100.00 | Click here for pictures |
| Haig-Brown, Roderick – RETURN TO THE RIVER – 1974 printing of 1946 1st edition – 248p – Collins, Toronto – I have always considered this author to be right up there with the best of the angling story tellers. His style of writing is sorely lacking in our present day literature. In this effort Haig-Brown , observing with the trained eye of the naturalist what he records with a novelist’s skill. Here he sets forth the dramatic life history of one salmon from her hatching through her mating – the full cycle of her life cycle. He writes in a style as vigorous as the great fish itself. His factual accounts are as enjoyable to read as any fiction. – With former owner’s bookplate, book is fine condition in near fine dust jacket. - $35.00 | Click here for pictures |

Dr. Herd is considered to be one of the most informed angling historians of modern times and his website is swamped with visits from those seeking historical angling facts. This book, “The Fly” was the result of decades of research into the history of angling and may well be the single most authoritative work published to date. The author does a good job of putting the reader in the shoes of those who have gone before, enabling us to understand what it was like to cast a fly in the days of yore. | Hewitt, Edward R. – A TROUT AND SALMON FISHERMAN FOR 75 YEARS – 1966 ptg of 1948 1st. – 338p – Abercrombie & Fitch, NY – Ed Hewitt was the consummate angler, his world and life were devoted to the subject. His many innovations contributing to almost all aspects of our pursuit are still important today. In his day, Ed was a man you either liked or disliked, but one you could not ignore. Tales of escapades are legendary, but could usually be backed up by fact. Ed, never one to avoid the spotlight, was once fishing for salmon while a few of his guests watched. He made several casts to a fish visible to all, to no avail. Due to Ed’s flawless reputation as an angler, this brought a chuckle from the spectators. Dauntless as ever, Ed turned to his guests and explained the problem. He told them the fish had only one eye and he had made the casts to the wrong side of the fish. This brought even more chuckles as it seemed like a lame excuse for not being able to interest the salmon to take. Ed told them I’ll catch him on the next cast or two. Well he did, and to the amazement of all, the fish had only one eye. This was Ed Hewitt. – book is in excellent condition. - $65.00 | Click here for pictures |
| Hewitt, Edward Ringwood – SECRETS OF THE SALMON – 1925 2nd edition – 159p – Schribners, NY – Ed Hewitt is one of the elder statesmen of American angling and has greatly influenced ensuing generations of fishermen. The crux of this book of secrets is titled “What the Fish Sees” and is based on Hewitt’s endless experiments with how fish view a fly. He developed special portable tanks for this purpose which enabled him to take amazing photos of fish in action. And from this, Hewitt ever the thinking man’s angler, learned much about the secrets of feeding fish. Hewitt was truly an expert angler and much can be learned from his writings. – This is a very nice, clean 2nd edition copy of this well received work. - $45.00 | Click here for pictures |

His knowledge is notable and his stream conservation methods remain important today. | Hewitt, Edward R. – HEWITT’S HANDBOOK OF FLY FISHING – 1933 1st edition – Marchbank, NY – 116p + index – Ed Hewitt was a unique individual with enough money to devote his life to fly fishing which was obviously his first love.
