All in all, this is just the kind and abundance of information a reel lover and collector would hope to find in a book. This book in hardback now sells for well over $300.00. – This one - $40.00

Orvis, Charles F./Cheney, Nelson A. – FISHING WITH THE FLY (Sketches by Lovers of the Art with Illustrations of Standard Flies) – 1886 2nd edition – 328p – Houghton Mifflin, Boston – This is a rare little book that is highly sought-after by those who are interested in collecting the important early books of American angling literature. Orvis apparently used all his angling fame clout to assure only articles by angling luminaries of the period were included in the text. These well-known contributors read very much like a -who’s who list among angling authorities of the day. Greats such as Seth Green, W.C. Prime, Charles Hallock, Fred Mather, Dr. James A. Henshall, and Henry P. Wells to name a few. The articles touch on all aspects of the sport which includes charming poetry, skills, geographic regions and much more. But what this book is actually noted for, are the 15 spectacular full color chromolithographic plates of the most famous flies of the day. The full color plates are complete with the names of each fly. There is a certain charm to books of this period that many lovers of the literature, myself included, find particularly appealing. – As you can see by the photos, this book is in unbelievably wonderful condition for a 125 year old publication. The gilt on both the cover and spine is still bright and the interior is spotless. With a firm binding this book actually rates better than very good for a 125 year old book. – All in all, a wonderful clean, bright copy sure to please the discriminating collector. - $175.00

Pool, J. Lawrence – IZAAK WALTON (The Compleat Angler and His Turbulent Times) – 1976 1ST Limited to 2000 Copies Edition – 134p – Stinchour, West Cornwall, CT. – Izaak Walton’s 1653 masterpiece “The Compleat Angler” was the only angling book ever to make the crossover into mainstream literature until Norman Macclean’s “A River Runs Through It” did the same, albeit in a much smaller way, in 1976. Only the Bible has endured as many re-printings as Walton’s opus. Interestingly Walton is known for his endearing charm and grace and the language in “The Compleat Angler” speaks of a much more idyllic time in history. Those not familiar with the actual history associated with Walton’s period may be led to believe all was calm and peaceful. On the contrary, this time in English history was full of turmoil and even old kindly Izaak had more than his share of dissenters. Hard to believe as it may be, some of those dissenters were early animal rights activists. If you enjoy angling history, you will want to read this book. Includes frontispiece portrait, 9 illustrations, a map of Walton’s London with map endpapers. Also included a bibliography of notable editions of “The Compleat Angler” – Both book and dust jacket are as new. - $35.00

Well know as the author of many book and illustrator of countless others and having written classic angling books such as “American Trout Stream Insects” (1916) and The Speckled Brook Trout” (1902), it poses the question.
